    CASE SDUTY:BBC Archive Centre PerivaleUK

The BBC’s purpose-builtmedia Archive in Perivale, London, opened in 2011. The BBC archive is a rich historical resource that can track the evolution of broadcasting in documents, radio programmes, television programmes, photos, sheet music and vinyl collections. It really is one of the largest broadcast archives in the world. It is held on multiple tape/film/sound formats and it needs to be housed in appropriate climate controlled vaults in order to prevent the tape and film stock degrading over time. The new BBC archive centre has nine climate controlled vaults which can be individually adjusted for temperature and relative humidity. It is fitted witha series high-densityarchive storagesystems tohouse theCorporation’s precious stock of archive material. The archive contains a total of 3.7 millionitems.

    The solution

Having undertaken the complete operation, including the installation of 3.9metre-high mezzanine floors, more than 5 km of rails for the high density mobile storage systems, together with 4500 sq.m of infill-flooring on the ground-floor, and a similar quantity of steelmesh decking on the mezzanine level, we were able to provide the BBC Archive Centre Perivale with more than 85,000 shelves. The buildingnow provides 100km of linear shelf capacity. Consisting of shelving units mounted on mobile carriages that run on floor rails, it reducesthe footprint of a storage system by having only one “floating” aisle instead of a series offixed aisles.

    CASE SDUTY:BBC Scotland Archive,Pacific Quay,England

Bruynzeelsupplied mobile shelving forBBC ScotlandArchive to store itsdigital tapes of television programmes when the corporation moved itsdigital broadcasting centreto new premises at Pacific Quay in Glasgow. Designed byDavid Chipperfield architects, the BBC’s HQ was one of the new buildings around which Glasgow’s‘Digital Quarter’ has developed, on the banks of the River Clyde.
The BBC’s Information and Archives Vault is situated on the second floor in the heart of the building. Although budget was a consideration the client also wanted a solution that was aesthetically pleasing. The safety of the vault users was also paramount.

    The solution

Bruynzeel offered a Compactus®archive storagesolution for BBC Scotland. The provision of safety aisle locks and torque limiters (slipping clutch) throughout provides excellent user safety.

For aesthetic purposes the client requested that the system guide rails be installed into the existing computer floor as well as glass end panels from the selection of finishes offered. The complete system provides BBC Scotland Archive with over 8,000 linear metres of storage in eight blocks.

CASE SDUTY:Borthwick Institute for Archives, UK

Byinstalling an electronic mobile storage system in its archive repository, the Bothwick Institute for Archivesset a precedent, becomingthe first public records office in the UK to adoptthe latest generation of electronic mobile systems for storage.

The Borthwick Institutewas founded by York Minster in 1953. Its core collection remains the Archibishop of York’s archive, which dates back to the 13th Century. Since then the collection has expanded to fill some 30,000 fully indexed archive boxes holding, amongst other things, archive documents from chocolate manufacturers Terry’s and Rowntree’s, Sir Alan Ayckbourn’s personal archive – plus nearly every will in the north of England from 1300 to the 19th Century.

For 50 yearsthe collection was housed in a the medieval wing of St Anthony’s Hall complex. Even in the early 1950s, the accomodation was not ideal for an archive. Thanks to a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, the Institute was able to build a new, dedicated building in 2004 and approached Bruynzeel to supply archive storagesolutionsfor its 10 climate-controlled strongrooms. The archive’s new 21st Century home opened to the public in 2005

    The Solution

Chris Webb, Head of Archives at the Borthwick considered variousstorage options for the archive’snew repository. However, standards atthe time for historical archives and public records were based around the useof manually operated systems. “With the nature of the material we hold, wehave to take account of The National Archives’ regulations,” Chris explains.

After providing information about Bruynzeel’s system and examples ofnational archives using electronic mobiles in other countries, the Borthwickgave the go-ahead to install electronic mobile shelving as its preferredsystem.Bruynzeel installed 57 mobile carriages in the repository. The system has integrallighting, air circulation parking and the capacity to link operation with thearchive’sdatabase. The Bothwick’s architects, Leach Rhodes Walker, had originally specified conventionallighting for the repository that required over 300 fluorescent tubes. Howeverthe client eventually opted for the mobile shelving integral lighting, cutting thenumber of tubes to under 200. This also provides much better illuminationand saves on power costs.

After more than a decade inoperation, Chris Webb says the Borthwick was rightto install an electronic system , with benefits in terms of ease of access, savings on power cost, and simplicity of use.

“We’ve got a dual responsibility to ensure the preservation of material and makerecords accessible,” said Chris Webb. “We felt this system would be a big help on both counts. The benefits for preservation and access we were hoping to see are working out in practice.”

    Results

    • First electronic storage system of its kind installed by a public archive
    • Integral lighting
    • ElegantJacob Jensen designed Shadefront panels
    • Space for over 30,000 indexed archive boxes

    CASE SDUTY:Underground archive, Sweden

Wartime caverns converted into a modern archive repository in Karlstad

Imagine if your workday began by entering a mountain. For archivists at the Värmlandsakiv(Varmland regional archive) in Karlstad, this is their reality. A few times every week, the staff go underground at Zakrisdal to carry out their work.

Buried deep in the bedrock 30 metres below the surface, in a former munitions factory dating from the 1940s, you will discover the equivalent of an archivist’s gold mine. With space at a premium above ground, it was difficult to find enough floor space for large archives in existing buildings, while the cost of constructing new repositories wasprohibitively expensive. Zakrisdal offered a unique and cost-effective opportunity to solve Varmland Archive’s capacity issues, by creating an underground archive in converted cavernsat the disused factory. Specially adapted ‘capsules’ fitted with Bruynzeel’s Double Decker mobile shelving have been built in the caverns as storage rooms for archiving, artefacts and files.

    30metres below the surface

once inside the light-filled storage areas, it’s hard to image you’re 30m below the surface. The material stored in caverns at Zakrisdal is varied – everything from old church books and court records to company archives and confidential government documents. More often than not it is older materials, documents that are infrequently requested, that are stored in the cavern archives. Items that are requested more than two times a week are removed from the cavern and returned to Varmland Archives in central Karlstad.

The cavern is also home to glass plate negatives and microfilm stored in carefully monitored temperature-controlled spaces set at optimum humidity. Varmland Archives’ main stores in Karlstad has subsequently invested in research labs that are a popular destination for university researchers and genealogists, utilising the space freed up by moving their archive to the deep store at Zakrisdal.

Walkway linksDouble Decker shelving in separate caverns

To optimize storage space in the cavern, Bruynzeel installedDouble Decker mobile shelvingwith an interconnected walkway linking the caverns, which makes navigating the space easier for staff. The mezzanine floor in the Double Decker allows the storage of a much larger amount of material at an accessible height, providing over 28,000 linear metres of archival storage in total. The need for more storage is constantly increasing, and plans are already in place to expand.

Bruynzeel Storage Systems is the proud partner and supplier for Varmland Archive. It has been a great challenge to work together with Varmland archivists to find the most optimal solution.

When it comes to storage, thinking outside the box creates exciting results, such as the underground solution for Varmland Archive. With a greater openness to the public, a growing need for storage and ongoing expansion plans, the future of the formerly dark caverns now looks very bright.
